Should I redesign the UI before or after adding new features?
Short answer
Redesign first if the current UI can't cleanly express the new features without becoming worse for existing users. Otherwise, add the features and let the redesign follow real usage patterns instead of guessing at them upfront.
Leans yes if
- —The current design already struggles to express what the product does today, before any new features are added
- —The team is guessing at a redesign anyway — better to do it once, informed by the new feature set, than twice
Leans no if
- —The current design works fine for what exists today and the new features fit within it
- —You don't yet have enough real usage data to know what the redesign should actually prioritize
