Should I get a security audit before launch?
Short answer
Yes if you'll handle real customer data, payments, or anything a breach would make expensive to explain. A pre-launch review is cheaper than a post-breach one, structurally and reputationally.
Leans yes if
- —The product will handle customer PII, payment data, or anything with real breach consequences
- —You're heading into a compliance requirement (SOC 2, ISO 27001, a customer's security questionnaire) that will demand this eventually anyway
Leans no if
- —The product is an internal prototype or pilot with no real user data yet
- —You've already had a recent, scoped review and nothing material has changed since
