The Unowned Pilot
A pilot proves the concept works, then nobody is assigned to actually scale it.
What it looks like
- —The pilot 'worked' months ago and is still just the pilot
- —No one has budget, time, or explicit responsibility to expand it
- —It's referenced as a success story internally but never grew past its original scope
Why it happens
Pilots get funded to answer 'does this work,' and that funding often ends the moment the answer is yes — scaling requires a different kind of commitment that was never actually planned for.
How to avoid it
Decide who owns this after the pilot succeeds before the pilot even starts. A pilot without a named next step is designed to stall by default.
