Token
The basic unit of text an LLM processes — roughly a word or word-fragment.
LLMs break text into tokens (often a few characters or a common word-fragment) rather than whole words. Model pricing, context limits, and processing are all measured in tokens, which is why usage costs scale with the length of both input and output text.
