The practice of designing inputs to an AI model to reliably get the output you want.
Because LLMs respond to natural-language instructions, how a request is phrased — the structure, examples given, and context provided — meaningfully affects output quality and reliability. Prompt engineering is the discipline of designing and testing these instructions systematically, rather than trial-and-error.
